SOP for Making Handmade Ladkans (Decorative Elements)
Process:
Introduction: In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of creating hand-hemmed ladkans—beautiful decorative elements commonly used in ethnic wear.
Cutting the Fabric: Start by cutting a rectangular piece of fabric, measuring 1 inch in length and 10 inches in width.
Cutting Circular Pieces: Next, cut three fabric circles in the following sizes:
- First circle: 1 cm in diameter
- Second circle: 1.5 cm in diameter (to be used for the ball material)
- Third circle: 2 cm in diameter
Thread Selection: Choose a thread that closely matches the fabric color to ensure the stitches blend seamlessly with the material.
Running Stitch on Circular Edges: Take the small and medium-sized circles. Sew a running stitch along the edges of each circle, ensuring the stitches are small and even.
Gathering the Fabric: After completing the running stitch, gently pull the thread to gather the edges of the fabric. Once gathered, place the fabric inside a piece of waste fabric. Shape the gathered fabric into a small ball and secure it by locking the thread in place.
Creating the Ladkan Shape: Take the long rectangular fabric strip and lock the edges in place. Sew a running stitch along its length and pull the thread to gather the fabric, creating a pleated effect.
Securing the Gathered Fabric: Once the fabric is gathered into pleats, lock the thread to secure the pleats in place.
Adding the Small Ball: Take the small fabric ball you created earlier and place it inside the gathered pleats. Hem the edges to secure it in place.
Creating the Second Circle: Flip the fabric over and take the medium-sized circle. Fold it into a small circle and hem the edges neatly.
Placing the Large Ball: Take the largest fabric ball and place it in the center of the assembled ladkan. Hem it securely to ensure it stays in place.
Final Touch: Once all the components are stitched and secure, your handmade ladkan is ready for use!
